Hodsgon gave Sturridge and 18-year old Rashford an opportunity to make a mark at the European Championship after including the strikers among the group of forwards to be a part of his final 23-man lineup. Sturridege’s inclusion comes after his successful and impressive performance in their friendly match win against Australia at the Stadium of Light and he proved that he had fully recovered from his latest calf injury. He only played 58 minutes for the country since September 2014 and he looks to bounce back big time by working on his fitness and has now completed two sessions for the preparation in their final friendly match against Portugal.
But, Rashford’s inclusion definitely caught some awareness for the football aficionados given he was playing for the under-18 squad of United a few months ago. He would be an asset in France despite Kane, Rooney and Vardy will start as the team’s first choice forwards. He is a reliable scorer of the bench for the English team. And this is the time to show to the world that he really belongs to the world of football.
Fabian Delph was ruled out due to a groin injury and Hodgson chose to omit Leicester’s Danny Drinkwater and New Castle United’s Andros Townsend because they didn’t able to cut a face-to-face meeting with the English manager after their training at Watford’s London Colney base on Tuesday morning.
Drinkwater’s exclusion to the team was expected although he had an impressive run as an important member of Leicester’s championship squad in the Premier League. The decision to cut Townsend was taken despite assistant coach Gary Neville advocating the New Castle’s cause. However, Townsend was recalled by Hodgson but it was only a setup because Danny Welbeck was also out with an injury and gave the winger 14 minutes to make an impact in the games against Australia and Turkey.
The England manager retained the balance he had required for the squad by trimming Townsend and adding five strikers and Rasheem Sterling, who can operate well in the pitch whatever he wants to. Seven defenders and eight midfielders are also included. Still, Rooney will be the centerpiece for the squad. The soon-to-be-legend united striker has made some impressive and amazing performances and he wants to give England a Euro Cup title before his time ends. The group departs for Chantilly, north of Paris, on Monday to prepare for their match against Russia at Marseille.
